Back from the war

On the way back from yours
I stopped at the garage
to see if the pastries were on offer
and if the humous shortage
had reached Hereford.

Entering through the automatic doors
I was struck by the clarity of the song playing
and as I bought a bar of chocolate
I noticed microexpressions
that would normally go unseen.

In the way back from the car
I imagined I had spent the last decade
in the unnecessary chaos of battle
and now I was coming home
to live in peace at last.

These feelings are rare
and usually prove misleading,
but nonetheless it was pleasing
to hope, however vainly
that the struggle is over.
